Vienna Delays Vote on Meals Tax Again

The Town of Vienna purchased the 3-acre property, home of the Faith Baptist Church, for $5.5 million in 2020.

At its Jan. 27 meeting, the Vienna Town Council voted to temporarily defer the proposal to raise the meals tax from 3 to 4 percent. The extra one percent would fund the design and construction of a new aquatics and fitness facility at 301 Center St. The town purchased the 3-acre property, home of the Faith Baptist Church, for $5.5 million in 2020. The site is in the center of the town.

According to the town’s news release on Jan. 27, the council gave itself more time to review the facility's projected building costs, long-term operational costs, and community feedback before making a decision. This is the third time the Council has postponed the vote on the proposed one percent temporary meals tax. Council is expected to reconsider the proposal at its Aug. 25, 2025, meeting.

"This facility would be a big investment, and before voting on how to fund its construction, we must be sure that we will have the resources to maintain it once it is built," Vienna Mayor Linda Colbert said. "It is important that we allow sufficient time to do our due diligence to ensure whatever decision we make is in the best interest of our community. “

The town temporarily raised its meal tax once before, from 2002 to 2008, to pay for the Vienna Town Green. It is a central gathering space for public and private events and activities. Visit www.viennava.gov/annex for more information.
