Flu Season and Winter Preparedness

Flu season poses its own challenges, with the risk of catching the influenza virus. Added to that are winter emergencies like severe storms, power outages and icy conditions. Being prepared on both the health and emergency fronts is crucial. Here are some top tips:

Preventing and Treating the Flu

• Get the flu vaccine: The annual flu shot is the best defense against influenza. It’s especially important for young children, older adults, pregnant women and those with chronic conditions.

• Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Avoid touching your face. Cover coughs and sneezes. Disinfect surfaces regularly.

• Stock up on medication: Have over-the-counter medicines on hand to treat flu symptoms like fever, body aches, cough and sore throat. This includes pain relievers, decongestants, cough drops, etc.

• Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids like water, broths and electrolyte beverages if you become ill with the flu.

• Rest up: Get lots of sleep and rest to allow your body to recover if you do get the flu.

Preparing for Winter Emergencies

• Assemble emergency supplies: Have an emergency kit with non-perishable foods, water, blankets, flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies and other essentials.

• Have backup power: Obtain generators, power banks or other backup power sources to use during outages. Follow safety precautions.

• Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning: Never use generators, grills or camping stoves indoors. Install carbon monoxide alarms.

• Avoid icy roads: Only drive when absolutely necessary during winter storms. Stock vehicles with emergency supplies.

• Keep warm safely: Don’t use gas stoves or ovens to heat your home. Dress in warm layers and use fire-safe space heaters.

Combining Flu Care and Emergency Prep

• Stock up on medicine: Include fever reducers, decongestants, cough/cold medicines and anti-diarrheal medication in your emergency supply kits.

• Pack first-aid supplies: Bandages, antiseptic, thermometers, etc.

• Stay nourished: Keep high-protein foods, fluids and electrolyte beverages on hand to maintain strength if ill during an emergency.

• Manage underlying conditions: Those with asthma, diabetes or other chronic illnesses should have backup medical supplies and medication.

By combining flu prevention, emergency preparedness and common-sense safety practices, you can make it through this risky season as healthy as possible. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
